GUNSHOTS sent players, officials and spectators running for safety in the fourth quarter of a high school football match in the US.

The game between Carol City and Miami Central was called off with 2:58 remaining on the clock in the fourth quarter when the gunshots were heard.

Hume City twice came from behind to snatch an extra-time win over Oakleigh Cannons while Melbourne Victory got off to the perfect start on their way to a 3-1 win over Adelaide.

It was all in another incredible night of FFA Cup action.

MATCH REPORT: Victory win soured by serious Archie Thompson injury

AdelaideUnited had some bad omens heading into their FFA Cup quarter-final with Melbourne Victory. Inaugural cup holders Adelaide hadn’t beaten Victory in their last six meetings and got off to a horrible start, falling behind to a classic Gui Finkler free kick after just 10 minutes.

It could have been worse, had referee Peter Green decided, as Victory coach Kevin Muscat argued, that Osama Malik’s initial foul on Fahid Ben Khalfallah was worthy of a red card. Instead, the defender remained on the pitch, but it didn’t stop A-League champions Victory from doubling their lead right on the stroke of half-time, via Kosta Barbarouses.

Adelaide then attempted to mount a second half comeback and Marcelo Carrusca pulled one back from the penalty spot with 12 minutes remaining, but their hopes were dashed when substitute Archie Thompson was brought down in the box by goalkeeper Eugene Galekovic. A red card was again avoided but Besart Berisha sealed the win, which was soon soured by a late injury to 36-year-old Thompson, whose knee bent under a challenge in stoppage time.

HUME CITY v OAKLEIGH CANNONS

They are proving to be the comeback kings of the FFA Cup and Hume City have done it again.

Twice going behind against fellow Victorian NPL side Oakleigh Cannons, Theo Markelis twice equalised, including a goal less than 10 minutes from time to take the game into extra-time.

From there, hero Marcus Schroen scored in the 118th minute to progress 3-2.

But it wasn’t the first time Hume have been at the centre of an epic comeback, doing similar in the Round of 32 against Brisbane Strikers.

Then, Schroen had scored a 92nd minute equaliser to take Strikers to extra time, before they progressed in the most dramatic of circumstances — via a 121st minute own goal.
