Stuart Broad reveals Trevor Bayliss’ horror initiation to the England team at their pre-Ashes camp in Spain
ANTIPODEANS are often known for being pranksters but the joke was all on England’s Australian cricket coach Trevor Bayliss during one of his first social nights with his new team on their pre-Ashes camp in Spain.
In his new book ‘Broadside: How We Regained The Ashes,’ fast bowler Stuart Broad reveals how teammates Ben Stokes and Mark Wood gave Bayliss the fright of his life at a dress-up trivia night.
“Woody was sitting at the back of the room with his team when Stokesy walked in with his cap on back to front looking like a rude boy. Suddenly, Woody piped up from the back of the room,” Broad wrote.
“‘Stokes, you look like a *****,’ he shouted. ‘What did you say?’ Stokes shouted back. ‘I said you look like a *****!’
“Stokesy looked furious. He had a deadly serious look on his face as he stared straight at Woody, who proceeded to stand up shouting ‘Do you want some?’ before charging full tilt at Stokesy who was standing at the front of the stage. Before Trev — or anyone else for that matter — knew what was happening, ‘Bang!’, Woody was lying on the floor in a heap after Stokesy had apparently knocked his lights out.
“Now bearing in mind Trev had already witnessed Stokesy almost destroy a set of golf clubs with his bare hands after shanking a six iron, he could have been forgiven for being a bit concerned at that point. His face was a picture, along with those of the rest of the management.
“After a moment of silence as everyone tried to work out what had happened, the room burst into laughter as Woody jumped back on his feet unscathed. I looked at Trev and his face just said: ‘What the hell has just happened here
