Qld mum failed to stop toddler's abuse

A Queensland mother whose toddler daughter was brutally abused at the hands of her partner has pleaded guilty to child cruelty.
The 28-year-old, who can't be named to protect the child's identity, admitted to failing to remove her three-year-old from her then-partner's care, or provide her with medical care, at a sentence hearing in the Brisbane District Court on Thursday.
Crown prosecutor Sarah Farnden said the victim, now age nine, presented at hospital in November 2009 with injuries so severe doctors believed she could have died.
She had extensive face and head injuries, extensive bruising to her body, internal injuries and severe trauma to her genital area, the court heard.
Ms Farnden said according to one doctor the injuries would have made it painful for the child to walk, eat or use the toilet.
They were so severe they would have been fatal if left untreated.
The woman's former partner has been convicted of a string of charges including several counts of rape, as well as torture, grievous bodily harm and assault occasioning bodily harm.
The mother was also convicted of similar charges but won a retrial on appeal.
Her previous charges were substituted for the child cruelty charge on Thursday.
The woman denied knowledge of her daughter's sexual abuse, though Ms Farnden said she "must have" noticed the child's sexual injuries.
Her sentence hearing is due to conclude on Friday.
