Adelaide cyclist Rohan Dennis aims for world championship double
ADELAIDE’S Rohan Dennis will take aim at a world championship double in the United States Wednesday when he looks to add the individual time trial to the team event he won today.
Dennis spearheaded BMC’s six-man squad which led at every checkpoint of the 38.6km course to beat Etixx-Quickstep by 11 seconds and Movistar by 30 seconds. Australia’s Orica-GreenEDGE was fourth.
BMC averaged a blistering 54.9km/h through the streets of Richmond, Virginia, in what was hailed a near-flawless performance.
And leading the way was South Australian superstar Dennis, 25, who is enjoying an amazing season which includes winning the Tour Down Under, breaking the world hour record and wearing the yellow jersey at the Tour de France.
In a double Australian flavour, BMC sports director Allan Peiper was calling the shots from the team car as the team made it back-to-back world titles.
Dennis’ teammates in the train were Silvan Dillier, Stefan Küng, Daniel Oss, Taylor Phinney and Manuel Quinziato.
“Last year when we won, it was a bit of a surprise to a lot of people,” Dennis said.
“To win again really puts our mark on the team time trial on a world level. It is pretty big for BMC.’
Dennis will now turn his attention to the individual time trial over 53km on Wednesday. Defending champion Bradley Wiggins will not return to defend his title but German Tony Martin — chasing his fourth world championship gold medal — is expected to start favourite.
Meanwhile, the women’s team time trial world championship was won by Velocio-SRAM for a record fourth straight time.
The team — which is run by Australian Kristy Scrymgeour — was too fast for Boels Dolmans Cycling Team and Rabo Liv Women Cycling Team.
